Boeing wins $3.48 billion U.S. missile defense contract

(Reuters) - Boeing Co kick out Lockheed Martin to keep a position as a prime contractor for a U.S. long-range barb shield, a Pentagon pronounced on Friday.

The U.S. Defense Department pronounced it was awarding Boeing a $3.48 billion, seven-year agreement to develop, test, operative and make missile invulnerability systems.

A group led by Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Co had vied with Boeing to enhance and say a Ground-based Midcourse Defense, or GMD, heart of layered antimissile protection.

Boeing partnered with Northrop Grumman Corp to keep a work.

"We trust a supervision conducted a satisfactory and open competition, creation a right preference for a destiny of a program," Norm Tew, Boeing clamp boss and module executive of GMD, pronounced in a statement.

A deputy from Lockheed did not immediately respond to a ask for comment.

The GMD contract's value to Boeing will have been about $18 billion from Jan 2001, when it rigourously became a system's primary contractor, by a finish of this year, Boeing has said.

GMD uses radars and other sensors and a 20,000-mile fiber ocular communications network to evidence interceptors in silos in Fort Greely, Alaska and Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

The invulnerability has been made primarily to ensure opposite ballistic missiles that could be dismissed by Iran and North Korea. It is a usually U.S. invulnerability opposite long-range missiles that could be sloping with chemical, biological or chief warheads.
