A New Year Gives Each Of Us The Opportunity To Start Anew

A New Year Gives Each Of Us The Opportunity To Start Anew

DEAR READERS: Welcome to 2012! While a final year has been scattered for many of us, a new one is here, bringing with it a possibility for a uninformed start.

Today is a day we drop mortal aged habits for healthy new ones, and with that in mind, we will share Dear Abby's often-requested list of New Year's Resolutions, that were blending by my mother, Pauline Phillips, from a strange tenet of Al-Anon:

JUST FOR TODAY: we will live by this day only. we will not fruit about yesterday or obsess about tomorrow. we will not set inclusive goals or try to overcome all of my problems during once.

I know that we can do something for 24 hours that would overcome me if we had to keep it adult for a lifetime.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will be happy. we will not dwell on thoughts that subdue me. If my mind fills with clouds, we will follow them pided and fill it with sunshine.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will accept what is. we will face reality. we will scold those things that we can scold and accept those we cannot.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will urge my mind. we will review something that requires effort, suspicion and concentration. we will not be a mental loafer.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will make a unwavering bid to be agreeable. we will be kind and well-behaved to those who cranky my path, and I'll not pronounce ill of others. we will urge my appearance, pronounce softly, and not miscarry when someone else is talking.

Just for today, we will refrain from improving anybody though myself.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will do something certain to urge my health. If I'm a smoker, I'll quit. If we am overweight, we will eat healthfully -- if usually for today. And not usually that, we will get off a cot and take a sprightly walk, even if it's usually around a block.

JUST FOR TODAY: we will accumulate a bravery to do what is right and take a shortcoming for my possess actions.

And now, Dear Readers, we would like to share an object that was sent to me by I.J. Bhatia, a reader who lives in New Delhi, India:

DEAR ABBY: This year, no resolutions, usually some guidelines. The Holy Vedas say: "Man has subjected himself to thousands of self-inflicted bandages. Wisdom comes to a male who lives according to a loyal almighty laws of nature."

The request of St. Francis (of that there are several versions) contains a absolute message:

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;

Where there is hatred, let me boar love;

Where there is injury, pardon;

Where there is doubt, faith;

Where there is despair, hope;

Grant that we might not so most find to be consoled as to console;

To be understood, as to understand;

To be loved, as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive,

It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

And it is in failing that we are innate to Eternal Life.

And so, Dear Readers, might this new year move with it good health, assent and fun to all of you. -- LOVE, ABBY
